The Noller family tree/history Circa 1540-1925
(page three)
John Knoller (the third and last in direct lineage), the son of John and Hannah, was baptised 14th February 1735 only 15 months before his father was buried.
Aged 30 years John married Sarah Elmer of Eye (north Suffolk) on 18th February 1765. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Elmer, a miller, and Sarah Smith, and was born sometime after their marriage in 1738. John and Sarah had eleven children baptised at Eye between 1766-1779. Two of their children died in infancy; Mary (born 1774) in1781 and Robert (baptised one day before his burial) in March 1778. John was witness to the marriage of his son John to Charity Harris on 26th June 1778 and was recorded as John Knowler senior. On 13th July 1797, aged 62 years, John was buried at Eye. The Eye Particular Baptist church records that Sarah Noller was buried, but unfortunately is no more specific than giving the dates between 1805-1832.
William Knoller was born of John and Sarah in 1777, being baptised on 23rd March of that year at Eye. Five children are known of his marriage to Phoebe Hurrey at Eye on 10th June 1798. Again the tradition of family names is shown with the baptisms of Phoebe (5th Aug 1798) and William (12th May 1800). Like many of his forebears William was an Agricultural/general labourer, recorded as such in the Census of 1841 when his given address was "Occold street, Occold , Suffolk". In 1838 a return for Hartesmere union (poor/workhouse), Occold on 28th September noted:- William Knoller, pauper, a resident due to "accident". William died 17th Jan 1851, according to his death certificate of "Affection of brain". His burial took place at Occold on 21st Jan. He was 75 years old. Phoebe preceded him many years before, having died age 39, and buried 6th Nov 1814.James Noller (noted variously Knoller/Nollar) was Baptised 30th Oct 1805, also at Eye, the son of William and Phoebe. He married Charlotte Reynolds (daughter of John Reynolds, Pauper/Agricultural labourer) of Mendlesham in Suffolk on 7th Jan 1828 at Occold. Occold lies about 2 miles south of Eye. In March 1842, aged 36yrs and living in Rishangles, he was found to be receiving relief from Hartesmere union due to illness, the sum of 16 shillings and 7d was awarded. James was an Agricultural labourer all his working life. He did, however, rise to the level of Foreman, being recorded in the 1871 Census as Agricultural labourer/Gamemaster, this being his occupation at Occold Hall. Occold can be seen at the middle right of the map (below) to the east of the parish
There were nine children of James and Charlotte. The inevitable infant death occurred in 1850, being that of Hephzibah, preceded a year earlier by Phoebe at an unusually late age of 15 years. Along with Hephzibah, another of James’ and Charlottes’ children had a biblical name-Ephraim was baptised (at Rishangles) 6 years after his birth in 1831, on 11th June 1837. Ephraim was a name much in vogue in the first half of the 19th century. The above was a "block baptism", along with Ephraim were Jane (born 1833), Joseph (1834) and Phoebe (1836).
For over thirty years James and Charlotte lived in Rishangles. A parish which lies about 2 miles to the south of Eye, it remains relatively unchanged in 150 years, consisting of a fork in the road with about a dozen houses and acres of surrounding farmland. The church of St Margaret is now a private dwelling whose grounds remain fairly typical of a church of a small parish, with many large trees shading thirty or so headstones. Mill green, where James and his family lived for much of their time in Rishangles, lies to the south of the village surrounded by farmland. The Tithe Awards show (James) "Noller" residing in a house on a bend in the road just to the south of the village ©1847. (see photo/map).
The 1" to 1 mile Ordnance Survey map, published 7 Aug 1837, clearly shows the bend in the road and dwelling found there at the south eastern edge of Rishangles where the Noller family lived circa 1835-70
